the amben is a pure relaxation furniture that brings the comfort of a javanese daybed to your home. it helps in creating a little retreat where you can find time for yourself or rest together with friends and family. being on the spacious mattress together, promotes a feeling of proximity.
amben (javanese language) = multi-function platform made of bamboo.
the amben is the oldest and most authentic javanese furniture. in early times, when local people still sat and worked on the floor, the amben was used to rest, craft and sell goods. while the amben almost completely disappeared from urban areas, one can still find it in villages today, with people resting on it and enjoying a good time together in the afternoon.
the mattress is placed on top of elastic bamboo slats that cushion when you move. the slats are derived from slicing one pole of local bamboo petung – that belongs to the world’s tallest bamboo species – into four planks.
the idea of utilizing elastic slats is inspired by the traditional pikulan tool, which has been used since centuries to carry heavy weights on one’s shoulder, relying on the natural strength of bamboo.
