the bale bed is a cozy retreat where you can leave stress behind and recharge from daily life. it embodies the ascending concept of javanese temple compounds, where the highest point is the most sacred place. likewise the bed’s mattress forms a platform on which you are closest to paradise.
bale (javanese) = platform or highest point.
the bale bed is inspired by temples from the last javanese kingdom, mataram. the main compound is located on top of a hill in the middle of tropical rainforest with a vast view to the southern sea.
climbing many stairs and passing through guarded gates, one reaches the highest point and the spiritual center, where pilgrims rest and envision.
the bale – designed by bagus prabowo – is aligned to the array of the temple gates. the bed’s legs resemble the two stone pillars and the steps between the legs the structure above the gates‘ doors.
the strong legs are crafted from solid teak wood. at the outer sides, the legs are decorated with artistic carvings, just like the door pillars of the temple gates have mystical carving.
TRAD. WOOD CARVING
the bed’s legs are adorned with a motive called „pusoko“ (=weapons). it is usually carved into the wooden pillars of the temple gates to protect the sultan from evil spirits.
wood carving is one of the most unique traditional skills native to java. our craftsmen all hail from jepara, the center for wood carving in central java.
