the angkringan table set embodies the flexibility and social warmth of a mobile javanese bistro. most suitable for an urban flat with lesser space, the table set fulfills all possible functions: eat, work, mingle and play. with the bench further creating a nice feeling of social proximity, the table set becomes the ideal hub of your home.
angkringan (javanese) = a small mobile outdoor bistro
in the later afternoon one can observe javanese men pushing mobile bistros to their regular spots at the side of a street, a cozy corner or beneath a tree. on one mobile bistro, the owner transports a few benches, chairs, food and a coal stove.
people come and mingle, have a hot tea, talk about politics or play chess. it is a place to come together and directly be part of a group that is different each time.
the ang bench enriches the angkringan table set with its social character. sitting on the bench together creates a feeling of proximity and ease. and the matching pillows make it nicely comfortable.
due to its light weight, the idea is to use one (extra) bench all across your home. in the hallway, on the balcony and at the table when you expect many visitors.
the visual identity of the ang bench – designed by singgih kartono – is defined by the legs’ flowing array of thin and thick lines. the optic is inspired by the traditional javanese alphabet hanacaraka.
two delicate pillows complete the comfortable and sociable character of the bench. aligned to the woven rattan elements, the pillows come with the truntum pattern.
the truntum pattern and the santai logo that garn the bench pillows are drawn manually using the batik technique. batik is one of java’s most renown skills, designated a world heritage by the UN.
the local artists draw the elements on fabric with a pencil, apply hot wax with the canting tool, dip the fabric in color, boil it in hot water to remove the wax (under which the fabric remains white) and then repeat the process for multiple color fabrics.
